New Law to Aid Trail Projects in Montco, Harper Says
7/16/2010

The development of recreational trails in Montgomery County got a boost with the enactment of legislation that allows PennDOT to sell certain lands to other public agencies, said Rep. Kate Harper (R-Montgomery).

“As our county continues to grow, preservation of open space and recreational lands becomes even more important,” Harper said. “Montgomery County has an ambitious trail plan, and this law will let the county fill in gaps with leftover PennDOT land.”

Harper and Sen. John Rafferty worked together to get the law enacted.

Act 58 of 2010 authorizes PennDOT to sell any improved or unimproved land acquired by PennDOT to other public agencies if the secretary of transportation determines the land is not needed for present or future transportation purposes. The law applies only to Montgomery and Bucks counties because a prior law allowing for this type of land transaction in other areas of the state specifically excluded these two counties.

The law takes effect in 60 days.
