Marshall Releases Statement on Port of Pittsburgh’s Grant Funding to Update Tug Engines
State Rep. Jim Marshall (R-Big Beaver) released this statement today regarding federal funding received by the Port of Pittsburgh Commission for use in re-powering engines in four tug boats that serve Pittsburgh, Beaver County and other western Pennsylvania inland waterways:
“As a board member of the Port of Pittsburgh Commission, it was my pleasure to participate in the announcement of the port’s receipt of $1,156,838 in federal funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This money is being used install new, cleaner burning engines and generators in four tug boats that serve Beaver County and much of the surrounding area.
“Additionally, I offer my thanks to the three private companies that own the vessels for contributing matching funds with the grant to complete the project.
“While I would have liked to have seen the boats equipped with natural gas engines so that Pennsylvania-based fuel could be used, I believe western Pennsylvania commerce will receive a boost through this project. Additionally, the dramatic reduction on pollutants from the new engines is a real plus for our waterways, air, and the health of our residents.”
“Specifically, this project will create a significant reduction in nitrous oxide, particulate matter, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide output from the vessels. The new engines will be able to use ultra-low sulfur fuel when it becomes market-ready.
“This federal funding was determined by competitive bid. Since the funding was going somewhere, I’m glad our project won out to receive it. Our manufacturers will benefit, our rivers will benefit, and our citizens will benefit.”
The Port of Pittsburgh Commission serves a 12-county region comprised of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Blair, Butler, Clarion, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Marshall was appointed to serve as a commissioner in 2009.
